Role: To prevent the ball from reaching the opposing team's attackers
Area: Centre third and defending third but NOT the shooting circle
The Wing Defence's main role is to intercept passes between the opposition's middle section to prevent opportunities for the ball to reach the opposition's shooting circle. WDs need keen perception, the ability to control the ball well, and the ability to quickly intercept balls. The WD works closely with the Centre, Goal Attack and Goal Defence.
If the opposition causes the ball to go off court in the centre third, either the Goal Defence or Wing Defence will take the sideline thrown-in. The Goal Defence or Wing Defence will also take free passes in the centre third to allow the attacking players to move forwards.
